McMorsel: How much waste may be accumulated in an SAA?

How much is 55 (really)?

Most hazardous waste is nonacute, and generators may accumulate up to 55-gallons of nonacute hazardous waste in a satellite accumulation area (SAA). [§262.15(a)] Does that mean 55-gallons per waste stream? Or is it the total quantity of hazardous waste in an SAA?

EPA’s position is the 55-gallon limit applies to the total quantity of hazardous waste in an SAA.

Caution: While the regulations allow identification of multiple SAAs to accommodate multiple waste generation points, creating additional SAAs to circumvent the regulations is not allowed. [RO 11452, 14703]. An example of such circumvention would be establishing a row of 55-gallon drums spaced out along a wall to collect waste from the same generation point. Be careful out there.
