McMorsel: Sometimes being
closed is a good thing!

paddlelocked doors

Good to be closed.

In general, hazardous waste containers must be closed at all times (except when adding or removing waste). Under the federal RCRA regulations, satellite accumulation containers can be open when venting is necessary for proper equipment operation or to prevent dangerous situations like extreme pressure buildup [ยง262.15(a)(4)].

But what does “closed” really mean? EPA’s guidance on this issue is in RO 14826, and some of it may surprise you.
