McMorsel: What is an
elementary neutralization unit?

beakers, vacuum truck, and tanks

It’s elementary!

Elementary neutralization units (ENUs) are a simple way to treat hazardous waste without a permit. The §260.10 definition restricts the waste being treated to D002 corrosive wastes only; any other waste codes on the waste are not allowed. One notable advantage is that an ENU may be a tank or a container, which means it could be anything from a beaker in a lab to a vacuum truck to a fixed tank that contains the waste and is appropriate for neutralization.

Here’s another advantage: D002-only wastes transferred directly from the point of generation into an ENU and neutralized do not have to be counted towards a generator’s category. [§262.13(c)(2)] A one-time notice to file under the land disposal restrictions program is still required. [§268.7(a)(7)] For more compliance morsels, visit our website.
