McCoy's RCRA Review

December 2020

Yep. CAA is coming

Yes! Our McCoy.VIRTUAL Clean Air Act seminar will be held on on March 23-25, 2021. As those who work with the air regs painfully know, CAA is a behemoth and its complexity is, well, daunting. We can help you understand how the pieces fit together and what the regulatory drivers are. Plus, our course provides several tools that will help you and your team better understand the CAA ecosystem.

Don’t store unwanted material indefinitely

Table 1 of §261.2 is what we affectionately call “the table with the asterisks.” A dash at the intersection of “commercial chemical products” and “speculative accumulation” generally means there is no clock running on the storage, use, or recycling of a raw material or product at a facility. However, that does not mean these materials may be stored onsite in perpetuity. Timeless EPA guidance provides clarification.   READ MORE

CCR liners hear alternative music

The next set of regulations in a long line of CCR rules pertains to an alternate liner demonstration. Effective December 14, 2020, EPA’s final rule creates a process allowing certain CCR surface impoundments to continue operation rather than close. The rule finalizes only one portion of a four-part March 2020 proposal, so additional final rules are expected.   READ MORE

Fresh farming

Farms and ranches around the country are finding new ways to increase the health of soil while increasing profitability. These modern cowboys are using biometric monitors, cover crops, no-till practices, and organized movement of cattle to preserve the land. This enables farmers and ranchers to produce higher quality food products and reduce the ecological “hoof prints” of cattle. Sustainable food production is more important than ever. Find out how.

Forest drone

2020 has been a record-breaking year for wildfires and this has resulted in a devastating amount of damage throughout the country. Pine beetles are killing large sections of forest pine trees and creating a tinderbox in our wild lands. Dr. Cedric Ogden is using drones with heat sensing technology to catch early beetle infestations before they can spread. And, as an alternative fuel source, damaged beetle kill wood is also being used.

Look to the sky

A rare stellar event will occur at the end of the month on December 21, 2020. This cosmic treat is referred to as the Great Conjunction of 2020, when Jupiter and Saturn line up closer than they’ve been in 800 years. This was last seen in 1226 A.D. during the reign of Genghis Khan. The planetary anomaly can be seen with the naked eye, so unleash your inner astronomer.
